OLTD 503 - online communications
Learning outcomes covered:
· Become familiar with common terms, definitions and elements related to online environments
· Plan learning opportunities most suitable to the strengths and challenges of a variety of environments
· Develop and design intentional learning activities suitable for the appropriate environment and the learner
I selected My Philosophy and Practice paper as an example of my learning as the activity got me to revisit Montaigne’s “On the Education of Children” almost 15 years after I first read it.
In writing the paper I got to reflect upon my career extensively. It forced me to consider and ultimately summarize the lessons I had learned as a teacher. It also exposed me to the APA format for the first time.
The paper also served as an introduction to the question of “How do our educational ideals determine our curricular goals?” or to put it another way, “How does theory inform practice?” As it turns out, my answer to this question is:Theory is essential. It is the foundation on which all education is built.

Learning outcomes covered:
· Become familiar with common terms, definitions and elements related to online environments
· Incorporate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
· Develop and design intentional learning activities suitable for the appropriate environment and the learner
The Takeaway is a summary of my learning in OLTD 503. I selected it as an example of my learning because it is a summary of all my learning for the course.
In writing the essay, I got to work with APA formatting for the second time.
As I described in the essay, OLTD 503 got me to delve deep into the Community of Inquiry model. It was my first exposure to COI and it took a little getting used to. The COI framework minimizes the role of the teacher which is something I had never encountered before. The course got me to consider new models of teaching and reaffirmed the importance of planning.
